From Kashmir to Kandy: A South Asian Odyssey
14 July - 30 October
The John Rylands Library
Christie Gallery
This exhibition offers an exploration of the rich cultural diversity and vibrancy of South Asia, through the fascinating collections of The John Rylands Library. Glimpse the many layers of ancient cultures, rich in literature and the visual arts, which underlie the modern geography of this region.
From Kashmir to Kandy features beautifully illuminated manuscripts, works of classical literature such as the Mahãbhãrata, ornate palm-leaf manuscripts from Burma and Sri Lanka, revealing letters from Nehru and Jinnah - the founding fathers of India and Pakistan - and material exploring links between South Asia and Manchester.
The kaleidoscopic complexity of the region is impossible to capture in a single exhibition, but we hope that From Kashmir to Kandy will give you a taste of the magic, beauty and excitement that is South Asia.
There are related events happening at The John Rylands Library including a Tour and close-up with the curator of the exhibition (17 Sep & 19 Oct) with the chance to see and discuss other items from our amazing South Asian collections as well as a workshop (22 Aug) where you’ll have the chance to create, bind and decorate your own handmade book – inspired by the beauty and diversity of South Asian book decoration and formats which can be seen in this exhibition.
Showing alongside From Kashmir to Kandy: A South Asian Odyssey at The John Rylands Library will be Spiritual Garlands.
