South Asian Whispers

1 October - 13 November
People's History Museum

Memories will also feature the film South Asian Whispers which combines archive footage and contemporary film of the Cheetham Hill area to illustrate migration stories, exploring issues of identity and place. The film, a Black Screen Heritage Project, made by trainee film curator Lwimbo Kunda, has been funded by Vision+Media and the UK Film Council’s Digital Film Archive Fund.

Featuring an original score by Jason Singh, the film compiles archive film material and new footage created within Cheetham Hill’s communities in collaboration with video artists Richard Ramchurn and Mauro Camal of AlbinoMosquito and poets Sarah Syeed, Saquib Chowdhury and Sarah Gbeleyi. South Asian Whispers pieces together the individual and collective voices of Cheetham Hill for a new and unique archive screening experience.

‘The South Asian Whispers project was a new way of working with artists, producing a unique film that focuses on local communities in Cheetham Hill and brings forth a kaleidoscope of memories to connect cultures and communities in our time.’ Alnoor Mitha, Executive Producer & Shisha Director.

South Asian Whispers is in association with Shisha, Cornerhouse, Centre for Screen Studies and Manchester University and is supported by Vision & Media, UK Film Council, Manchester City Council and the Foyle Foundation.
